Amazing Increase in Priests

It is nothing short of amazing and again proves the power of faith and prayer. A few short years ago the Catholic Church in the Diocese of Springfield, Massachusetts was facing a severe shortage of priests, not unlike many areas of the country. In addition, the Catholic Church was under attack, some deserving, some not, for the abuse issue. There was a critical juncture, however, with the shortage of priests who are foundational to the very existence of the Church. In answer to this there was the convergence of three important elements: The excellent and holy leadership of Bishop Timothy McDonnell of the Diocese of Springfield; the leadership of Father Gary Dailey, Vocations Director; and one of the holiest and well attended Churches in the diocese, Christ the King Church in Ludlow, MA, under the leadership of Father Raymond Soltys.

In 2005 the Adoration Chapel at Christ the King Church was designated as the chapel for vocations in the diocese. A monstrance that is used to hold the Holy Host representing what Catholics believe to be Jesus was sent to the Vatican and this was blessed by Pope John Paul II. The Adoration Chapel is open 7 days per week, 24 hours per day. There is not a time, day or night, where there is not a person present praying in the chapel, if not several people.

The results speak for themselves. This Fall there will be no less than 28 seminarians from the diocese who are studying for the priesthood. This is almost unheard of in most other regions throughout the country. Faith, dedication, holiness, and prayer resulted in a truly amazing and positive story for the Diocese of Springfield. A story that needs to be recognized and told.
